Ideoligical Parties- Political party based on a particular set of beliefs, a comprehensive view of social, economic, and political matters. Single Issue Parties- Political party that concentrates on a single public policy issue. Economic Protest Parties- Political parties rooted in periods of economic discontent. Splinter Parties- Political party that has split away from one of the major parties.

-To split the two major parties when they are competing on the same level. -Deny one of the major parties majority in an election (Election of 1912). -Force a major party to reassess its ideology and organization. -The minor parties' ideas are taken by the major parties. -Minor parties take a stand on controversial issues. -Federal laws make it hard for minor parties to receive public funding. -Minor parties are rarely taken seriously by media. -Difficult to recruit experienced candidates because they are devoted to the Democratic and Republican Parties. - Minor parties only do well in elections when nation is facing economic or social problems.

-Started off with a group of activists in Colorado. -Established Dec. 11, 1971. -Third largest political party in the United States. -This party believes in liberty for all; each individual is free to do what they want as long as it is humane. -Individual rights are necessary for a more successful world. -Believe that abortion should be decided by the individual bearing the child. -Believe that government should not control energy pricing or production. -Believe that natural resources should be used and that a clean, healthy environment is needed. Pollution and incorrect use of resources leads to a damaged ecosystem. The government is the biggest polluter.
